What actually goes wrong in a dachshund's back?

Dachshunds are chondrodystrophic. The same gene that gives them short legs and a long body also makes the cushioning discs between their vertebrae harden and dry out unusually early — often from around a year old, long before any owner would think to worry.

A healthy disc is mostly water. It squashes and springs back, absorbing every landing. A dried-out disc can't do that, so ordinary movement — hopping off the sofa, twisting mid-zoomie, taking the stairs too fast — sends the load straight through the spine instead.

Which is why this isn't really a joint problem. Joint supplements are built for hips and knees. This one is built for discs.

How does it work?

Everything in this chew exists to do one job: keep your dachshund comfortable enough to keep moving. It uses a fixed dose of UC-II® collagen to moderate the immune activity that drives joint discomfort, combined with high-concentrate Omega-3 and Boswellia for everyday ease. When a dachshund is
comfortable, they stay active. An active dachshund stays lean and keeps the muscle mass that protects their spine

How do I give it?

One chew a day. That's the whole routine.

Hand it over as a treat or drop it in the bowl. It's a soft chew, so there's no pill to hide, nothing to crush and no cheese required. Any time of day works — pick whichever one you'll actually remember.

Under 10 kcal per chew, which matters more for this breed than most: every extra pound is extra load on that long back, so the support shouldn't arrive with a weight problem attached.

Dosed for an 11–32 lb dachshund rather than scaled down from a Labrador-sized serving. Same chew, far more active per pound of dog.

What Can Juvo Paws Help With?

It helps break the silent cycle of soreness. When dogs feel low-grade discomfort, they move less. Moving less leads to weight gain and muscle loss—the two biggest modifiable risk factors for back issues. Juvo
Paws helps maintain their willingness to walk, jump, and play.

Will This Prevent IVDD?

No. And anyone who tells you a chew prevents IVDD is lying to you. Back problems in this breed are overwhelmingly genetic—the CDDY gene is in roughly 95% of dachshunds. You can’t change his genes. What you can control is his weight, his muscle, and his comfort. Juvo supports joint comfort so he stays active and strong

Is It Suitable For Your Dog?

If you have a dachshund who is over a year old, yes. We do not recommend it for growing puppies. If your dog has already had a spinal episode, consult your vet before starting any new routine.

Perfect for him

“I'd been giving her a joint chew meant for any dog up to 50 lbs, which always seemed daft for an 11 lb dog. This is the first one where the label actually accounts for how small she is. Small thing, but it's why I switched.”

Still walking strong

“Eight months in. I don't think about it any more, it's just part of the morning. He's ten now and still doing the same walk he did at six. I've no idea how much of that is the chew and how much is luck, but I'm not stopping to find out.”

He gets up on his own

“He's eight and I'd started lifting him onto the sofa because he'd stand there looking at it. Around week six I noticed he'd stopped asking. He just gets up there. It's not dramatic and I'm not claiming miracles, but that's a change I didn't expect.”

She's a fussy eater

“My girl will spit a tablet out of a lump of cheese. She takes this out of my hand like it's a treat. Took her about four days to decide she trusted it and now she comes running when she hears the tub. That alone was worth trying it.”

It's an essential to us

“We went through it last year and I never want to again. Our vet's fine with him having this alongside everything else she's advised the walks, keeping him lean, the ramp. It's one part of a routine, not the whole thing, and it's the part I don't have to think about.”

Honest Review

“Honest review: I can't tell you for certain it's doing anything. He was fine before and he's fine now. What I can say is he's kept his weight down, he's still keen on his walks at seven, and I'd rather be doing something sensible than nothing. Ask me again in a year.”

1 powerful formula.
Complete dachshund back support.

Unlike over-the-counter joint chews filled with cheap glucosamine and dosed for large breeds, Juvo Paws is built around a clinically relevant, targeted formula designed to support the specific biomechanics of a dachshund.

The Keep-Moving Complex™

Product tub / chew macro shot

UC-II® Undenatured Type II Collagen — 40 mg (10 mg active)

Instead of just being a building block, UC-II works through the gut's immune tissue to help moderate the immune activity that drives joint discomfort. Your 12-pound dachshund gets the exact same full active dose used in 70-pound dogs in clinical trials.

High-Concentrate Omega-3 — 340 mg EPA+DHA

Most chews use standard fish oil in symbolic amounts. We use a high-concentrate oil to fit a massive 340 mg of EPA+DHA into a chew a small dog can actually eat. In a 2024 study, this exact dose showed a 38% reduction in chronic pain scores in small dogs.

Boswellia (250 mg) & Curcumin Phytosome (100 mg)

We use standardised Boswellia and Curcumin as a phytosome — because plain turmeric is famously poorly absorbed, and we only use forms your dog's body can actually absorb and use for everyday ease of movement.

My story

Why I only make things for dachshunds

Founder with their dachshund

My story

Why I only make things for dachshunds

I had a dachshund named Monty. I lost him to IVDD when he was six.

It happened fast. One day he was tearing around the garden; a few weeks later he couldn't walk. If you've been through it, you know the guilt. You wonder what you could have done differently.

When I was ready for another dachshund, I made a promise: I would put everything in place to give my dog the best life possible. Not to prevent the unpreventable — I knew better by then — but to keep her comfortable, keep her moving, and give her the best odds.

I looked for a supplement. But everything on the market was a generic hip-and-joint chew dosed for a Labrador, full of fillers. So I took my savings, sat down with vets and canine nutritionists, and built the thing I couldn't buy — dosed for a dachshund, every milligram published. Juvo Paws exists because I couldn't find what my dog needed, and I knew I wasn't the only dachshund owner who felt that way.

Took the tub to her check-up and asked outright. My vet's view was that supplements aren't magic and the walks and her weight matter more — which is roughly what the label says too, so that was reassuring. No objection to her having it. That was enough for me.

I sat with three tubs and compared them properly. Two of them wouldn't tell me how much of anything was actually in there — just a "proprietary blend." This one prints every milligram on the front. I don't know if that makes it work better but it tells me something about who's making it

Was using one of the big all-breed ones for two years. Never had a problem with it, I just couldn't work out what she was actually getting - the dose chart went from 5 lbs to 50 lbs in one band. Switched for that reason more than anything.

We lost our first boy at nine after two bad episodes and I said I'd never get another. Obviously I did. This time I'm doing everything I actually can do - the weight, the walks, the ramp, this. I know it doesn't come with guarantees. It's for me as much as him, if I'm honest.

He's three, he was bouncing off the walls before and he's bouncing off the walls now. So — no visible difference, and the site did warn me that'd probably be the case at his age. Keeping him on it. Not sure I'd have bought it if they'd promised me more.

Research-backed key ingredients

Tap the + on any ingredient to see the evidence behind the dose.

Green-lipped mussel

New Zealand, whole

Green-lipped mussel

600 mg

The best-evidenced ingredient in the tub. Multiple independent research groups, a double-controlled trial against an active drug comparator, and force-plate outcomes rather than owner opinion. We doubled the usual spec so a dachshund's per-kilo exposure sits inside the studied range.

Omega-3 concentrate

70–85% concentrate

Omega-3 concentrate

340 mg EPA+DHA

The strongest finding in the whole project. At this dose class, small dogs (under 11 kg) showed a 38% improvement on a validated chronic pain index — large dogs showed nothing, because they were simply too big for the dose to matter. Only reachable with high-concentrate oil, never standard 30% fish oil.

Boswellia serrata

65% standardised

Boswellia serrata

250 mg

Almost always underdosed at 100 mg. It is also the only ingredient whose canine study population explicitly included spinal disease. The 65% standardisation is a testable quality claim — commercial boswellic acid content varies wildly.

Curcumin phytosome

Phospholipid complex

Curcumin phytosome

100 mg

Same dose you have seen elsewhere, completely different material. Plain 95% extract is the worst-absorbed form tested in beagle pharmacokinetics — you were paying for something that largely doesn't get in.

UC-II® collagen

Undenatured type II

UC-II® collagen

40 mg (10 mg active)

Our differentiator. It works by oral tolerance — an immune mechanism dosed per dog, not per pound. A 12 lb dachshund gets the full dose used in trials on 66–70 lb dogs. Independently funded canine trial, no declared conflict.

Vitamin E

Natural α-tocopherol

Vitamin E

25 IU

Raised because here it does a real job: AAFCO requires more than 0.6 IU per gram of PUFA, and omega-3s measurably deplete α-tocopherol in dogs. It protects the marine lipids from oxidation.

What you might expect from daily use

One chew a day. Here's how it builds, week by week.

Read this first: these are typical patterns, not promises. Older or stiffer dogs tend to show more visible change. A young, comfortable dog may show none at all — and that is a completely normal outcome of proactive care.

Week 1

It lands

Actives absorbing. Omega-3s starting to incorporate into cell membranes. Nothing visible yet — if he's wary of the new chew, that's normal.

✓ 94% of dogs ate it willingly within two weeks

Week 3

It builds

Omega-3 levels climbing. UC-II beginning its work through gut immune tissue. Some owners notice a softer coat first — that's the Omega-3.

✓ 90% saw a change they'd describe as positive early on

Weeks 4–6

The window

Blood Omega-3 approaches the level associated with comfort benefits in canine studies. Easier rising, less hesitation at stairs, more energy on walks.

✓ 78% noticed less hesitation at stairs by week 5

90 days

It settles

Levels plateau — the range where the canine trial measured a 38% drop in chronic pain scores in small dogs. Whatever change you see is settled by now.

✓ 87% were happy with the product after 90 days

6+ months

It holds

Consistent daily use maintains the benefit. Stop, and levels fall back. A dog who still wants to do the things he has always done.

The detail, if you want it

The science behind it

Why a spore probiotic?
Probiotics only work if they arrive alive. Most dog probiotics use Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains that are largely destroyed by heat, moisture and stomach acid before they reach the gut. Bacillus coagulans is a spore-former — it stays dormant and protected until it reaches the intestine, then germinates and gets to work.
Why prebiotics matter as much as probiotics
Delivered bacteria need food to establish a colony. Without a prebiotic fibre to feed on, they pass through within a day or two. Roasted carob and chicory inulin are prebiotic fibres that feed the good bacteria the moment they land — which is why the results hold instead of resetting when you stop.
Colostrum and quercetin for skin and gut lining
Bovine colostrum provides antibodies and growth factors that support the gut lining, while quercetin is a plant flavonoid that supports a normal histamine response — which is often the real driver behind paw-licking and itchy skin.
